The
Project
In
1976 the only existing railway in the Dammam-Riyadh corridor was the single
track line of about 560 km connecting
Dammam to Riyadh passing through the towns of Dhahran, Abqaiq, Hofuf, Harad and
Al-Kharj. The S.R.O., aiming to develop the railways sector, entrusted
Technital to carry out the final design and the works supervision relating to
the upgrading of this line, which
involved the complete redesign of the horizontal layout of the alignment with
the introduction of geometric elements suitable to modern operative standards.
Successively Technital was entrusted with the feasibility study,
preliminary and final designs, and works supervision of a new high speed railway line between the capital,
Riyadh and Dammam, the main Saudi port on the Persian Gulf. The first part
of this line, up to Hofuf, represents the doubling of the existing one.
The project also includes all the ancillary
facilities, above all the three main railway
stations of Dammam, Hofuf, Riyadh and the maintenance installations, including a Major Maintenance Workshop
in Riyadh for the maintenance of the Diesel-electric locomotives, a Running
Repair workshop for rolling stock in Riyadh, and a Running Repair workshop for
passenger cars in Dammam.
